It’s such a joy to have this “newsletter/blog” back on a regular schedule!
I pray that it is a blessing of encouragement to you. Today I am thrilled to introduce Christine Anderson, who has joined the ministry as a writer. I just finished her study below and got some great insight. I love that about God’s Word -even familiar passages are new each time we open our heart to God.
I pray that you are blessed with Christine’s insight.
Be encouraged and have courage! – Jennifer
Fear Not
by Christine Anderson
Christine has been married to her high school sweetheart for 13 years. They have four sons, ages 12, 9, 4 and 2. In her free time Christine enjoys reading, spending time with friends and doing puzzles. She and her family live in eastern Nebraska.
I have lived my whole life in fear – fear of what other people think of me, fear of failure, and fear of looking “stupid.” I’ve made too many decisions based on fear. I even chose my college major out of fear! I have many regrets and many missed opportunities – all because of fear.
Thankfully, I have a God who is continuously inviting me to confront my fears. To say it has been difficult would be an understatement. My flesh would much rather hide from God than risk my fears being realized. So with trembling hands I cling to His promise in Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Over and over again God has met me at my place of fear and walked me through it. It isn’t always pretty, but He continues to prove Himself faithful. The funny thing is that my fears haven’t even been based on fact; they’ve been based on lies – lies that I’ve believed as if they were the truth.
Jesus tells us that “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) How exactly does the thief steal and kill and destroy? He does it by getting us to believe lies. That is his game, plain and simple. In John 8:44 Jesus calls him “the father of lies.” It isn’t a complex game that he plays, but it is highly effective. You see, if we believe the enemy’s lies then we do not believe God’s Word.
My problem was that I didn’t even know that the lies were lies; they sounded true to me. Can you relate?
Adolf Hitler, a man who actually convinced people that the horrors of the Holocaust were acceptable, said, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.” Kind of scary, isn’t it? We believe lies simply because we’ve heard them so many times. Yes, our enemy puts forth great effort in making sure we hear lies, but even worse is when we help him by repeating the lies over and over again to ourselves – like when we stand in front of our bathroom mirrors berating ourselves for not looking like a girl in a magazine. We are doing the enemy’s work and we don’t even realize it!
So what should we do? We must stop rehearsing the lies and we must start SPEAKING the truth. And the only way to SPEAK the truth is to KNOW the truth. The only way to KNOW the truth is to FIND the truth. The only place to FIND the truth is in GOD’S WORD. The more time you spend in God’s word, the more you will learn the truth. Only when you know the truth will you be able to recognize the lies that you believe. Only then will you find freedom.
God doesn’t want us to live in fear. John 10:10 says that Jesus came, “that they may have life, and have it to the full.” God has so much planned for each of us but fear keeps us stuck where we are – ineffective, unhappy, and unable to move forward; that isn’t living life, it is simply waiting for death.
Don’t let the enemy’s lies keep you from the abundant life Jesus died for you to have.
Dig Deeper
Grab your Bible and notebook and let’s dip deeper!
Open your Bibles and read Ephesians 6:13-18.
- What is being described in these verses?
- List the pieces of battle-wear and what each is for.
- There is only one offensive weapon listed (v. 18); what is it?
- How is the Sword of the Spirit defined?
- How do you think the Word of God acts as a weapon?
Read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
- Write out verse 4
- Looking back at what you wrote in Question #1, what is the weapon we fight with?
- Verse 5 talks about taking our thoughts captive “to make it obedient to Christ.” What do you think that means?
- How will knowing God’s word help you to take your thoughts captive?
Read John 8:32
- What is the result of knowing the truth?
- In what areas of your life do you need to be set free?
Read Galatians 5:1
- For what reason does Christ want to set us free?
Pause and reflect on what you’ve read.
- Which of the pieces of armor do you use?
- Which pieces of armor do you lack?
- What will you do, this week, to seek the truth and the freedom that comes with it?
Christ wants us to be free – free from the enemy’s lies, free from fear, free from insecurity, free from low self-esteem, free from everything that keeps us from the abundant life Christ waits to give us. Yes, it can be your reality. It will take some work and a lot of faith, but it CAN and WILL happen as you replace the lies with truth. Jesus said it so beautifully in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Amen, my Lord, Amen.

Doing this study brought to mind a verse I read this morning: Isaiah 28:5-6, “In that day the LORD Almighty will be a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people. He will be a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.”
I pray that you will be wise and use the armor of God to turn back your battles at the gate, before they even have a chance to enter.
With love and encouragement,
Jennifer
